World Mission Sunday will be celebrated in our local Church and throughout the world next weekend October 17th and 18th.
In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, the prophet Isaiah recounts his call to the Lord’s question: “Who shall I send?” The prophet responds: “Here I am, send me.”
Pope Francis reminds us: “Understanding what God is saying to us at this time of pandemic also represents a challenge for the Church’s mission. Illness, suffering, fear, and isolation challenge us…This situation should make us even more attentive to our way of relating to others...The impossibility of gathering as a Church to celebrate the Eucharist has led us to share the experience of the many Christian communities that cannot celebrate Mass every Sunday. In all of this God’s question: “Whom shall I send?” is addressed once more to us and awaits a generous and convincing response: “Here I am, send me.”
“The celebration of World Mission Sunday is also an occasion for reaffirming how prayer, reflection, and the material help of [our] offerings are so many opportunities to participate actively in the mission of Jesus in His Church. The charity expressed in the collections that take place during the liturgical celebrations of the third Sunday of October is aimed at supporting the missionary work carried out in [the] name [of Pope Francis] by the pontifical Mission Societies, in order to meet the spiritual and material needs of peoples and Churches throughout the world, for the salvation of all.”
Through the Second Collection Next Weekend, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith helps the society to provide resources to missionaries in 1,111 mission dioceses throughout the world to care for Christian communities in need and for the proclamation of the gospel to the ends of the earth.
Let us fulfill our call by being missionaries to one another and through prayers and support to people doing mission work in different countries in the world.
