Christians are called to be disciples of Jesus, faithfully living His Word in their daily lives. The readings today remind us that discipleship is not always easy. Isaiah describes being beaten, insulted and spit upon because of his devotion to God. But rather than compromise his faith, Isaiah “set his face like flint” against those who opposed him and remained firmly committed to God’s Word. Hopefully, our faith today will not draw such severe hostility and abuse. But when we do face hardships or challenges, God is always near to help us stand strong. Our commitment to discipleship may require us to “set our face like flint” from time to time. However, the reward for doing so is the ultimate triumph of God’s love. Remember what Isaiah tells us: “The Lord God is my help; who will prove me wrong?”
