Let us not give up hope and remember that we are part of a wider mission that needs attention.
Once again, these days, the media has been filled with the pain and suffering the Church in Buffalo has been experiencing due to past and present sins of some of our priests. It is not the first time the Church has faced struggles and difficulties and unfortunately it probably will not be the last.
St. Paul in his second letter to the Thessalonians also addressed the struggles of the early Church. Not only were the Thessalonians suffering from persecution, but also there were false prophecies and rumors swirling about purportedly written by St. Paul. The community was unsettled much like our Church is today.
Even though the Thessalonians were facing all kinds of problems, St. Paul chose to begin his letter to them commending them for their ever-increasing faith. St. Paul saw more than the problems. He saw all the good that was happening among them. His encouragement helped them to see that good for themselves.
Sometimes in the face of obstacles we all need a kind word to keep us moving forward in order that we might not lose sight of all the good the Church still does. A simple word of encouragement can change the tone of an environment and bring peace to a situation on the verge of discord. Even a humble “thank you” can brighten someone’s day.
Just as St. Paul chose to recognize the growing faith of the Thessalonians, so too we can choose to see the good in people and let them know about it. In these dark days it is easy to lose sight of the more powerful good that the Church is doing because we are surrounded by such dark clouds. Let us not give up hope and remember that we are part of a wider mission that needs attention at this time too.
We continue to pray for the victims of abuse of any kind. We continue to pray for healing and a just resolution to all for all who have suffered because of such sin.
Anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse by a priest or religious is encouraged to contact the Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Diocese of Buffalo, Ms. Jacqueline Joy at 716-895-3010 (jacqueline.joy@ccwny.org) and the Diocese for assistance.
