This weekend the Celebration of Holy Week begins.
This weekend the Celebration of Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. During this liturgy, palm branches are blessed and we commemorate Jesus’ glorious entrance into Jerusalem. Branches of palm, olive or sometimes even budding willow, were used as they are ancient symbols of victory and hope as well as new life. The procession celebrating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem overflowed with praise and excitement as onlookers waved these triumphant branches and proclaimed their blessing.
The Sacred Triduum or the “Three Days,” are the center of our liturgical year. Lent ends and the “Three Days” begin with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper and continue through Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil and conclude with Easter Sunday.
Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood, as well as Jesus’ command of love and service. On Holy Thursday we reflect on what it means that Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Our response is to be the model of service Jesus gave us. Holy Thursday also reminds us that it is the Body and Blood of Christ that nourishes us in the Eucharist.
Good Friday reminds us that we share in the Passion and Death of Jesus.
The Easter Vigil is the high point of the “Three Days”. The proclamation of Christ’s Resurrection means we are alive for God in Christ Jesus.
Easter Sunday marks the end of the “Three Days” and is the first day of the Easter Octave (8 days). Forty days of fast yield to fifty days of feast. Our Easter liturgies are meant to lead us as disciples to announce the Risen Lord and Savior to our World.
Please join us as we celebrate these most sacred days and experience the grace of God’s new life.
