“Pray for the victims, pray for the men on this list, pray for future priests, and pray for the Church presently having to deal with this difficult time for all.”
The last several weeks have been very difficult even painful for the Church of Buffalo. Over the course of the last several weeks several people have come forward to express their hidden pain of abuse by priests of our diocese many years ago. They, in many cases, have been carrying that secret and hidden pain for a long time and now are relieved to be able to speak out about.
This is not a secret that the diocese has been trying to keep quiet, but a sin that has confronted the diocese for many years. As situations have arisen and allegations against clergy made, the diocese has attempted to do everything possible to aid the victim and remove the priest from ministry.
Sadly, this sin is not just a Church matter, but occurs in every walk of life. However, it is more pronounced and perhaps more scandalous because these are trusted people who are held to a higher standard and are looked up to by parishioners. When such a sin occurs people feel a deep sense of betrayal because someone who was thought to be trust worthy has taken advantage of their position in the community.
This past week Bishop Malone released the names of known diocesan priests who have been accused of sexual abuse of a minor. This may trigger memories for others who have been abused. Anyone who has been carrying this secret, painful burden with them is encouraged to contact The Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Diocese of Buffalo, Ms. Jacqueline Joy at 716-895-3010 (jacqueline.joy@ccwny.org) and the Diocese of Buffalo for assistance.
One post I read on social media this week suggested: “Pray for the victims, pray for the men on this list, pray for future priests, and pray for the Church presently having to deal with this difficult time for all.”
