We are in the midst of a widespread outbreak of the flu.
This past week Bishop Malone sent a letter reminding us all that we are in the midst of a widespread outbreak of the flu. It is one of the most widespread in some years. Bishop Malone reminds all of us to take necessary precautions to protect our own health as well as the health of others during the flu season. To prevent the spread of contagious diseases requires good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently with soap and warm water. Avoid close contact when sick. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Bishop Malone has suspended the distribution of the Precious Blood for the faithful of our diocese except for those who must receive from the chalice due to medical reasons. For this reason we ask you to use good judgment if receiving the Blood of Christ. If you are feeling ill in any way, you should not receive from the chalice to prevent the spread of germs.
Extra caution should be used during the Sign of Peace. If you have a cold, a simple bow rather than shaking of hands is another way of extending the Sign of Peace.
If you are ill or suspect that you are ill with a contagious illness, you are not bound by the Sunday Mass obligation and do not have to attend Mass while ill.
The hope is by following good health practices we can lessen the spread of the flu and help prevent the spread of the flu. Our prayer is for all to be well during the rest of the winter season.
