The Advent Season is a time to prepare for celebration and directs our attention toward the Hope and Expectation of Christ’s coming that
we will celebrate at Christmas time this year.
The past few weeks our scripture readings, particularly the Gospels, have called us to be prepared for the coming of Christ at the end of time. The Advent Season, which we begin this weekend, directs our attention toward the Hope and Expectation of Christ’s coming that we will celebrate at Christmas time this year. Advent is a time to prepare for this celebration. We will celebrate Christmas in various ways, as a Church, as family and friends, and as a community. Each of the ways that we celebrate Christmas requires us to prepare in different ways.
As a Church, we celebrate our faith and the coming of Christ into our world. This suggests that we prepare spiritually for the celebration of Christmas. The birth of Christ represents for us the gift of new life and love. Our hope is that our lives and our love will increase during these days of Advent.
The Advent wreath has become a symbol of hope and expectation that Christ, the Light of the World, comes to dispel the darkness. Over the four weeks of Advent each candle lit brings us closer to the brightness of Christ our Light. We are reminded that Advent is a special time of prayer, which can be challenging with the hustle and bustle of so many things going on.
Advent is a beautiful season. Our preparations for Christmas are meant to be enjoyed. May it be a happy time for all.
