Today we continue our Christmas celebrations with the Feast of the Epiphany. We remember how the Magi or Kings travelled from afar to honor Jesus in Bethlehem. We are here today coming from near and far to honor Jesus who is present among us.
During this season I came across a meditation in the book “Word Among Us.” The meditation pointed out that the gospel readings in Advent and Christmas used “Amazed” several times in response to the events that are occurring in the lives of all those who were a part of the first Christmas.
When Zechariah was delayed in the Temple by an angel telling him that Elizabeth was with child, the people waiting outside were amazed at how long he took. When John the Baptist was born and Zechariah’s tongue was loosened and he was able to speak again to confirm that the name of the child is John, the people were amazed. When the shepherds heard the good news that Jesus was born they hurried to the site and they too were amazed at the words the Simeon spoke of the Child Jesus.
Certainly, this is an amazing time of year for us. As we begin a New Year we reflect on the past and think of all the amazing things that God has done for us and the prospects of the amazing things that God can still do for us. Truly, God is with us.
